Vulcan Charred Cladding

Vulcan Charred is created from thermally modified New Zealand plantation timber with natural stability and durability. The timber is factory charred in the style of Japanese shou sugiban or ‘yaki sugi’ with ‘heavy alligator’ finish. The boards are then coated with Abodo’s Char Oil to create a unique high durability black finish for exterior or interior use.

Introducing Vulcan: New Zealand’s premier carbon-negative timber, offering a sustainable alternative to Western
Red Cedar.

Vulcan’s thermal modification process enhances stability and reduces moisture content, preventing warping, cupping, and bleeding. Ideal for cladding in dark colors, even in warm climates.

ABODO’s Charred (Shou Sugi Ban)

ABODO’s Shou Sugi Ban cladding brings the timeless beauty of traditional Japanese wood charring techniques to modern design.

Crafted with precision and care, this charred timber features a deep, textured finish that highlights the natural grain while providing enhanced durability.

The charring process not only delivers a striking aesthetic but also improves resistance to weathering, pests, and decay. Perfect for creating bold, dramatic exteriors or sophisticated interiors, ABODO’s Shou Sugi Ban is a sustainable and visually stunning choice for any project.

CHARRED

Finishes

ABODO’s Charred finish is created using the ancient Japanese technique of Shou Sugi Ban, a method that involves carefully burning the surface of the timber to enhance its texture and durability.

The controlled charring process carbonizes the wood’s surface, sealing it naturally and creating a distinctive, deep black appearance with striking patterns that highlight the grain.

After burning, the timber is brushed and finished to achieve a smooth yet textured aesthetic.

STAIN

Our charred cladding is available in a single, authentic color—natural black. This deep, rich tone is a result of the charring process itself. No additional stains or colors are applied, ensuring a timeless and natural aesthetic.

FAQ

Yes. For most profiles, we offer various corner, flashing, fascia and finishing profiles to match the cladding boards. Using these accessories will ensure optimal performance of the cladding system in service.

Cladding is bit more technical than decking, so always consult with a professional before starting your project. A Licenced Building Practitioner is required for install.

Abodo cladding may be face fixed or secret fixed depending on the profile shape. Stainless steel ring shank nails or self-drilling stainless steel countersunk screws should be used in all cases. Generally we recommend to fix boards onto a drained cavity system to allow good airflow and optimum weather protection.

All profiles requires a minimum 2mm expansion gap to be left between boards, you need to ensure all cut ends must are resealed with penetrating oil or sealer. Boards should be coated all sides and re-coated regularly as required thereafter.

Refer to the Resources page for more details including installation manual and drawings.
